An Unconventional Path to Art
Andrew Folley is a retired physician whose path to art has been anything but conventional. Though he has no formal training, his creative instincts have been a constant throughout his life. What began over 30 years ago with photography and watercolor painting gradually expanded into acrylics and oils, evolving alongside a lifelong curiosity for hands-on expression. Even during his years in medicine—through residency, lectures, and the demands of raising a family—he found himself drawn to creating, often working with his hands as a way to stay engaged, focused, and inspired.

Shaped by Travel and Observation
Folley’s artistic voice has been shaped as much by experience as by observation. Extensive travel with his family exposed him to a wide range of artistic styles, from renowned museum collections to the raw energy of street art created by everyday people. These experiences instilled in him a deep appreciation for art as both a personal and cultural expression. A pivotal moment came during a chance encounter with a gallery auction at sea, where he discovered pieces that sparked a deeper interest in collecting—and ultimately, in creating work that evokes the same sense of joy, movement, and color in his own home and beyond.

The Evolution of an Artistic Voice
At the heart of Folley’s work is a belief that art begins with appreciation. He sees artistic development as a natural progression from admiration to exploration, shaped by individual taste and lived experience. Inspired by what resonates with him visually and emotionally, his work has moved through various stylistic phases, reflecting an openness to experimentation and growth. His portfolio is intentionally eclectic, a reflection of both his influences and his desire to share that evolving journey with his community.

Influences, Mediums, and Life Beyond the Canvas
Drawing inspiration from artists such as Pablo Picasso and Peter Max, as well as local street artists, Folley embraces a wide range of techniques, including plein air painting and multimedia approaches. His life outside the studio continues to inform his work: he and his wife are avid travelers and scuba divers, often bringing back visual inspiration from their adventures around the world. Now based in North Padre Island, Texas, Folley is also a proud father of four grown children—including a daughter who is an artist in Manhattan—and continues to create with the same curiosity and enthusiasm that first drew him to art decades ago.
